A pregnant woman

Hello and welcome to power birthing.  If you have found your way here because you are currently pregnant or have just had a baby congratulations!!  Thank-you for stopping by, I hope you find what you need.

I am Jessica Starr, a healer, doula, writer, and mother living and working in Caerphilly, South Wales (and doulaing in Cardiff, Caerphilly, Merthyr, Newport and the surrounding areas).  I have created this site to provide love-based, rather than fear-based, information about pre-conception, pregnancy, birth and the transition to parenthood.  It also includes information about my work with women and couples pre-conception, during pregnancy, birth and beyond (listed under my doula service in the black menu on the left of the page).

Parts of this site are under construction at the moment.  I’m having a prolonged labour with it – but I’m hoping to birth it very soon.  Please bear with me.  In the meantime please contact me if there’s something you’d like to ask.

What is Power Birthing?

I believe in the birthing power of women and my dream is for all women to have births (in whichever manner they choose or circumstances dictate) which make them feel powerful and to realise their potential as mothers.

When I was pregnant I found lots of the articles and books I read relating to positive birth experiences talked about the importance of “empowering” i.e. giving power to the birthing mother.  At the time I thought this was an admirable goal, particularly as some of the common practices in our maternity care in the UK (and in many other parts of the world) are definitely not empowering.  Now, after having birthed my daughter and moved further into this wonderful mother phase of my life, I realise that empowerment is not actually what is needed – we are already amazingly powerful.  The challenge we face today is trusting our own inate birthing and mothering power.

As a wise person once said (Yoda, I believe) “with great power comes great responsibility” and this is true.  (I think that this is why the term “power” has such bad press).  When we are powerful we accept our responsibilities gladly and act accordingly.  For women in the transition to motherhood this means being informed about our options and having the courage and support (if needed/wanted) to tap into the power that exists within us.

You can find out more about my background and training here.  If you can’t find what you are looking for, or have any questions, please contact me.  I will be happy to help.
